Special Orders

stein #2900
Mettlach produced a large number of products (especially beer steins), which were given a custom decoration and / or shape according to customer requirements .

The client could be a company or an individual. The occasions of these so-called special designs were very diverse. Often it was a specific event, a special product (e.g. beer brand) or an organization (e.g. brewery, university) for which one wanted to advertise. Other decors should remember a specific person or place.

There were no limits, you just had to raise the necessary capital (money). And I think that such customer requests had their price, even though I could find nothing about the pricing at that time.

It is certain that these special designs were often exported to the USA. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are articles with verses which are written in English only.

Known examples of such customer orders are the Chromolithstein # 2373 for St. Augustine, Florida , which has a handle in the form of an alligator, 3 steins for Cornell University # 2870 - # 2872 and the Quilmes Brewery (Argentina) stein with the form number # 2900 .

But other "scratched" pitchers such as # 2238, # 2281, # 3135 and # 3156 were made exclusively for the American market and had a limited clientele.

Villeroy & Boch Mettlach has also sold un-decorated steins ( so-called blanks ) to customers. Above all, the large number of steins of student fraternities which are available on the market, have colorful decors of their escutcheons and are well-known. They were hand-painted, printed under glaze or cold-painted over glaze.

When decorating over the glaze, the colors were not fired (and thus protected), so that a stronger color abrasion shows over the decades. Also, with these steins, the exact age of the decors can not be specified because they have often been decorated many years after the production / sale of the blank.

These types of steins were not decorated in large numbers and are usually difficult to locate. Usually you will find on these steins only the form number (no tower or Merkur mark) and possibly even a letter displayed.

The most common form numbers for individual decorations I have listed below:
